Vauxhall Law Centre Presents: I, Daniel Blake @ Kitty’s

June 3, 2023 @ 7:00 pm - 9:30 pm

FREE

Vauxhall Law Centre has been dedicated to supporting community struggles for the past 50 years. Originally founded in 1973 with the aim of offering housing advice to residents of the Scotland Road are, during a time when numerous houses were deemed uninhabitable, the organisation has since expanded its efforts to combat poverty and fight against injustices within the community. Vauxhall Law Centre remains committed to providing free, independent advice, particularly those seeking assistance or representation during appeals for disability benefits or eviction cases. The Law Centre continues to play a crucial role in supporting people who are sick, disabled, or otherwise vulnerable within the community.

This year is Vauxhall Law Centre’s 50th anniversary and they’ve planned a week of celebrations which aim to highlight the lack of access to social justice and levels of poverty which have become much worse in the recent past.

I, Daniel Blake is the story of Daniel Blake (Dave Johns) who is a 59-year-old widowed carpenter who must rely on welfare after a recent heart attack leaves him unable to work. Despite his doctor’s diagnosis, British authorities deny Blake’s benefits and tell him to return to his job. As Daniel navigates his way through an agonizing appeal process, he begins to develop a strong bond with a destitute, single mother (Hayley Squires) who’s struggling to take care of her two children.

Winner of the Palme d’Or at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival, this modern classic from legendary director Ken Loach is a gripping, human tale about the impact one man can make.
