Kitty's Launderette Spring Newsletter 2024

Hello from the team at Kitty’s Launderette. We hope that you are enjoying the lighter nights and warmer weather. As regular customers will know we have had an incredibly busy winter and early spring at the launderette, with our amazing team tackling the daily mountains of washing, making cuppas and conversation.

This isn’t to say we haven't found time for our weekly Knitting at Kitty’s and Tea and Toast Tuesday groups over the colder months. In fact our Knitting at Kitty’s group even got their banner featured in TATE Liverpool’s latest exhibition You Get a Car [Everybody Gets a Car]. The banner, which is made entirely of recycled fabric collected at the launderette as part of our 2023 textile waste project, will be on display until 10th July, Be sure not to miss it. Click here for the link for further info. Here’s a picture of the Knitting group standing proudly in front of their work on the opening night!

With the football season coming to an end, things should start to die down a little and the team can take the time to catch up on both our behind the scenes work and host a few more events this summer. All our events are free to attend and if you have any questions/suggestions for the programme please email creative@kittyslaunderette.org.uk.

Upcoming Annual General Meeting of Members - 27th June, 6pm-8pm

This past year has flown by and our annual general meeting is here again. As a workers-community co-operative our AGM is a great opportunity for customers, community members and workers to meet, reflect and share the story of the past year. It's also a time where we envision the next 12 months with plenty of opportunities for input from attendees.

Each year at the AGM we collectively appoint our board which is made up of workers and community members who then act to ensure that we’re working towards our goals and objectives that we set out to achieve as a social enterprise.
This year there we will be running the election online from 6th June till 20th June, so please keep an eye on your emails or speak to the team at the launderette to cast your vote. New board members will then be officially welcomed at the AGM.

If you’re an active user of the launderette space and are not yet a co-operative member why not sign up and have your say. It's a simple process and just requires you to fill out a form in the launderette. Next time you're in please ask a member of the team who can help you fill it out.

The new election process is just one of the changes that came out of the Governance review conducted by the board in 2023/24. The review funded by Co-ops UK gave the board and team an opportunity to review and reflect on our structure and how it can best serve our organisational purposes. We will discuss in more detail the improvements made at the AGM as well as giving members a chance to ask any questions or make recommendations.

Clothing Alterations and Repair

We’re super excited to relaunch our alterations service with local community member Kay taking over the reins. Kay, who is a member of our Monday ‘Knitting at Kitty’s’ group brings with a wealth of experience and a great eye for detail.  We’re delighted to be able to offer this service for all of our communities' alterations needs. Please CLICK HERE to find out more about prices and further information about the service.

Eco Products and Factory Kitchen Collaboration

Before we sign off we’d like to remind you that the launderette has recently begun to stock a wider variety of eco cleaning products and plastic free refills.

As a business we are committed to reducing our environmental impact wherever possible and support our community to have more eco options available.
We buy the products directly from another co-operative called Suma, and sell them on as close to cost price as possible. They are great for the environment and really good for sensitive skin and reducing chemicals around the home.

We are teaming up with our friends over at Factory Kitchen in L3 to offer spring hampers, available exclusively at Kitty’s. We have chosen 6 of our favourite and most popular eco-cleaning products, and Factory Kitchen 6 of their best homemade organic preserves.  The perfect gift or treat for yourself.

Like us, Factory Kitchen are a small north Liverpool-based business who believe in community, sustainability and all things eco. They have become a bustling part of the north docks area, providing residents with a colourful social hub and entertaining evening events space. Check out @factory.kitchen on Instagram for more info on them. These hampers will only be on offer until the end of August. Individual jars from £4 or get the whole hamper for a free jar.

As always thank you for taking the time to read these updates and we hope to see you all soon doing your laundry or at one of our events. A cup of tea is waiting with your name on it :)
